Front & Centre Stage Productions is pleased to announce Kaitlyn Wharton as the recipient of the second annual Blair Llewellyn Memorial Scholarship.
Wharton is a third year student attending Frostburg State University with the intention of pursuing doctoral degrees in English and Fine Arts. Currently studying film this semester at Northumbria University in England, she plans to teach English at the university level full-time after graduating, while also working to enter the world of publications and illustration. Wharton has held five solo art exhibitions locally, the first at age 16. Additionally, she holds a permanent installation in Frostburg, which she plans to refresh every six months.
“I am both honored and humbled to be awarded this scholarship in memory of someone who cared so much for our small, but strong, arts community,” said Wharton. “I plan to use this fund to complete my English and Fine Arts degrees so that I may be better prepared to give back to this community with as much vigor and care as Blair did.”
Front and Centre Stage Productions established the Blair Llewellyn Memorial Scholarship to honor the memory and work of the late playwright, author, and Front & Centre Stage Board Member, Joseph Blair Llewellyn, who passed away on March 25, 2013. Blair was enthusiastic about all forms of art, but had a particular fondness for literary and performing arts. He combined those interests into writing plays that were performed in Allegany County, Maryland. His poetry was published in local literary magazines and he also co-authored a book of short stories with his brother, Mark Llewellyn.
The scholarship is available to full-time college students or recent high school graduates who live in Allegany County or one of its surrounding counties and who have declared, or intend to declare, a major in either Theatre or English. Front & Centre Stage will begin accepting applications for the 2017 scholarship in April.
